Synergy is awesome

by Ryan French on Feb.04, 2008, under Cool Stuff, Techy Stuff

Just a quick post. So I got a laptop the other day, and the biggest hassle I have is using the mouse pad (its my first laptop). For now I am only really using it at home, and I want to get a bluetooth mouse to use on it when I am at home. My flat mate put me onto Synergy.

So basically what it does is once you set it up, it allows you to use one keyboard and mouse to control multiple machines. At the moment I am writing this post on my Ubuntu Gutsy laptop, but am using my Vista Desktops mouse and keyboard to do it.

There was one issue I found. When I first got it up and running I could transfer my mouse over onto my laptop but not back again. So effectively my desktops mouse was stuck on my laptop. Turned out that this was because when I was setting up the server on my desktop I entered the rule ‘laptop is to the left of desktop’ but not ‘desktop is to the right of laptop’. Apparently the second statement is not as redundant as I thought.

So have fun playing around with that. The link is a nice little guide I used to set it up, with a Windows version you can download.
